Several Liebherr employees, including Helene Ruer, who works in external logistics, crossed the finish line in One City Marathon events on March 3 in Newport News. Ruer ran the event’s half marathon in 1 hour and 57 minutes. “It’s my fifth half marathon already,” said Helen Ruer, adding that she plans to run her first full marathon later this month.
Liebherr has sponsored the event for three years. This year, the marathon featured four races – the banner event, the One City Marathon, a 26.2 mile race, the half marathon, the Maritime 8k and the Nautical Mile Fun Run, targeted toward kids and families. Temperatures were in the mid-40s at the start of the race – ideal running weather.
As runners crossed the finish line, they ran past a huge American flag held aloft in front of Newport News City hall by two Liebherr 918 Compact Litronic Mobile Excavators. “We are proud to be part of this community and participate as sponsors of the One City Marathon, supporting our employees and those initiatives dedicated to building stronger and healthier communities,” said Ana Cabiedes, General Manager Marketing of Liebherr USA, Co.
Newport News Mayor McKinley Price said sponsorship support is key to the event’s popularity and success. When it comes to support by business such as Liebherr, “We are just very appreciative of what they do because we just on our own we wouldn’t be able to do this,” said Price. “And it ties the business community as well into the event and makes them feel part of the city.”
